Grulla-black+ dun
Cremello-chestnut + double cream
Sorry I went for the genetically correct route..XD Adelis is a bay dun..She gets the dun gene from her sire. Her brother is a perlino which is bay + double cream. So he gets the double cream from his dam and his sire since it possible for a horse to carry more than one dilution gene at the same time. Kohana carries both the dun and creme genes. Wait these horses are bay how is it possible to get a bay horse from a black based and chestnut based horse? Simple, bay is a black horse with a modifying gene called Agouti. Agouti restricts the black pigment to the legs, mane, and tail. A chestnut horse can "hide" Agouti because a chestnut horse cannot make black pigment so there is nothing to restrict. Aylen is a carrier of Agouti since her offspring are bay based and a black horse cannot produce a bay horse unless bred to a bay or chestnut carrrying Agouti horse.
I'll stop blathering now. If you want to know more about horse genetics there are many sites out there that will explain how the genes work.
I am soooo impressed by your genetic knowledge! I love hearing about that stuff, even if it DOES make my eyes glaze over like dis-->
Anyhoo, this pic is lovely! I really like Kohana's shoulder stripe! It's really dramatic and cool. And Aylen's pink skin is so dainty! She's gorgeous! Thank you so much for making this. I really like it!
I went genetically correct with my entry, too, and I'm glad to see the one that won was correct also.
Just one thing that maybe you can answer. Can a cremello or pearlino horse pass on both its cream genes at the same time like that? I thought that to get a cremello or pearlino each parent had to have at least one.

A cremello and perlino horses are cr/cr which would make them homozygous for creme. Creme is an incomplete dominant so it will be expressed to some degree even when there's only one gene present.
If you breed you would get
cr/cr x cr/cr=100% chance cr/cr
cr/cr x Cr/cr= 50% chance cr/cr chance 50% Cr/cr
cr/cr x Cr/Cr= 100% Cr/cr
It is possible to have more than one dilution gene at the same time. A grulla (which is black dun) can carry creme as well. So we can say that Kohana also has creme as well. (he would would have a smokey looking color. I think it's called whitesmoke grulla. hmm..I should edit my description change him to whitesmoke instead of slate.. *faceplants* )
It was pretty late when I wrote the original description and forgot to put that in. I was trying to make sure that the pic was submitted in time.
I plan on making her a quick sheet for them so she can see all of the markings and the right colors since the pic has been tinted to make it appear they are bathed in sunlight from the setting sun.
Your explanation makes great sense! I think you and I are going to get along. I'm a perfectionist, so I always like it when I get the genes correct.
But doesn't that mean that the offspring of a cremello has to have at least one cream gene? Does Adelias have a cream gene? *wonders*
Yes, a grulla with a cream gene. I read it was called a smoky grulla. My entry for her contest was a smoky grulla paint mare and a buckskin stallion. ^^

We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
